Popsicles and ice cream cones. Sprinklers and swimming. These are just a few things that make for a memorable childhood summer. Know what else kids love? Spending time with you! So, we compiled a list of sweet summer traditions you can start with your family (and remember fondly for years to come)!
Pack a Picnic
We’re not talking a throw-sandwiches-into-a-tote-type picnic. We mean, go all out and pack the perfect
picnic basket. Choose a special scenic setting and make an occasion out of it. Hang out. Play Frisbee. Chase butterflies. Have fun!
Go to a Drive-In
Ok, so the romance of watching a movie from the comforts of your car may be slightly reduced by the ability of your children’s devices to deliver the goods anytime, anywhere. But trust us, they’ll love it. Bring plenty of snacks, set up a comfy “bed” and enjoy the shows. Yes, shows. Drive-in movie theaters usually show a few movies in a row!
Stargaze
Load up on bug spray, grab a blanket and find the nearest field. Your backyard works too, of course, if it’s relatively light pollution-free! The sensation of taking in a vast starry sky, the sounds of crickets and feel of summer air will be a family favorite for lifetime.
Plant a Perennial
Every year, pick a perennial at the local nursery. Then work together to select the right spot to plant it. Be sure to
have snacks handy for your little gardeners. They’ll love watching the plants “come back” every spring and over the years you’ll have built a beautiful garden together.
Go Geocaching
Hiking meets treasure hunt with this awesome family activity. There are little geocaches hidden in woods and parks across the country, and you can use your GPS to find them. Once you’ve located the cache, the kids will love looking through the “prizes” inside. Bring a little bag of nick nacks, so if you want to take
something you can leave something behind. Simply get a
geocaching free account, charge up your phone, pack some snacks and head out and explore nature together.
