Food trend alert! Food trend alert! …At least that’s what culinary magazines, food blogs and restaurant menus seem to be saying about three knock-your-socks-off, Old World flavors: Za’atar, Zhug and Harissa.
These soul-satisfying spice blends may be “having a moment”—and rightly so!—but to us, they’re just time-tested traditional recipes our family has been enjoying for generations. And now they’re part of the Cedar’s family of hommus flavors, allow us to introduce you.
Za’atar (sounds like “zaa-tar”)
Za’atar, an ancient spice mix from the Middle East, is a zippy, peppery, aromatic blend of thyme, sesame seeds and cumin. When mixed into Cedar’s Hommus, deep, earthy flavors come bursting through right from the first bite and keep you coming back for more.
Zhug (sounds like “zoog”)
Zhug is a time-tested, tantalizing surprise for the senses that hails from Yemen. Much more than simply hot and spicy, our zesty Zhug Hommus is filled with fresh cilantro, parsley, hot pepper, roasted garlic, lemon juice, cumin, clove and cardamom, and delivers a delightful depth to its flavor. It starts out herby, but then a striking spice kicks in and luckily, lingers.
Harissa (sounds like “huh-ris-uh”)
Harissa also originates in the Middle East, and is a common condiment in countries like Libya, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Cedar’s Harissa Hommus brings an ethnic punch with roasted garlic, roasted pepper, chile, caraway, cumin and coriander. The result is a fragrant, rich smoky flavor, providing the family with yet another authentic hommus option.
