Let 'Em Prep the Produce
What dish did you love growing up? Whether it was your grandmother's recipe or something a parent started, the tastes and smells of the kitchen we experience as kids have a wonderful way of lingering with us for life. So pick a breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert that has a little history in your family and have your little one get involved in the process. Those precious memories will last...they sure did in our family! Here are few ways to start bringing tradition into the kitchen with your kids.
- Have ‘Em Prep the Produce
Depending on your child’s age, there are quite a few ways they can help you out—yes, it may just be “helping” at first! Bring a sturdy step stool to the kitchen sink so they can safely reach. Put the produce in a bowl close by and let them rinse/scrub them with water and a veggie brush. Yes—there will be water everywhere and all that, but it’s all part of the fun experience with you that they’ll remember for years to come. If your child is a bit older, hand them a peeler too.
- Let Little Hands Measure Ingredients
Sure, your floors and countertops will get a good dusting, but this task sneaks in a little math, is a great sensory experience and promotes good hand-eye coordination in kiddos.
- Crown a Kitchen Taste-Tester
They say it’s the little things…but to a kid, licking the spoon is certainly not one of them. It’s what we in Massachusetts might call a "wicked big deal!" So go ahead and let them get an exclusive taste. It’ll not only bring a smile to your little one’s sweet face, but will also give you a little more “buy-in” on the meal, snack or dessert you’re about to serve.
